The most exquisitely precious time we have is NOW, this very instant, even though our 'now-time' is more fleeting than a spark or a speeding sparrow. It has passed and relegated to the past the instant after it arrives; no sooner is it here than it is gone. Yet, paradoxically, it is the only time when we can truly LIVE. How do we spend this precious moment that is NOW? Now-times are like treasures and precious gems with which we can trade for instants of living. Or we can ignore or waste them, never realizing or taking advantage of their value. We can use them to build creative dreams and plan for the future, or we can use our now-times to relive again and again -- either with pleasure or with pain -- experiences that are forever gone. Do we spend our valuable but elusive now-times regretting, resenting, complaining, or criticizing unalterable experiences in the past, or do we savor the past like lingering on feelings of love or gently embracing lovely memory images that inspire our making creative use of our NOW times? This instant is the only moment we are capable of feeling alive, and when we ignore it or use it carelessly, then time passes through our bodies and we age, but we are not truly living. Truly living means being completely involved in a life situation with the concommitant feeling of deep inner peace while participating in what comes next, with the sense that each instant that passes into the past is part of a larger, creative construction that uniquely expresses one's identity and meaning in the universe of meanings. Now time can be spent regretting the past or fretting fearfully about an imagined future, an unfortunate waste of the precious moment, a waste that brings but futile and nonconstructive outcomes. When we are not truly living, it is as if the clock stops; we can grow old with age, but inner development is arrested. Sad! Spending now time loving, planning, learning, playing, creating, helping, and otherwise attending the soul's urgings gives life its sparkle, meaning, and joy. Glorious! |
